Two Grizzly Bears playing at the Bronx Zoo. One of the bears, Jughead (all the Bronx grizzlies are named after “Archie” characters) died earlier this year.

I love grizzlies. Proud to say that here in Alaska, we have the largest terrestrial carnivore on Earth: the Kodiak grizzley bear, a subspecies of the “normal” grizzley bear. The largest specimen ever shot was 13 feet TALL, when standing on its hind legs. That is a big-ass bear, ladies and germs.

I have come across grizzlies and black bears on trails up here, and they both run away from you. Grizzlies have this interesting lope to their gait, as if they’re too big and fat to actually run.

Our street doesn’t really have street lights, and it gets very dark very quickly this time of year. I was walking the dog down a desolate, woody area yesterday and–I swear to Allah–I came two feet away from running into a giant bull moose’s butt. I heard a breathing noise ahead of me, squinted, and realized that the dark patch immediately to my right was a huge moose, probably annoyed by my close presence! I almost had a heart attack right there, but walked slowly away, then broke into a sprint. I think the moose might have been eying my dog while I was close to it, and thus did not turn its irritated gaze toward me.

Thanks for sharing, Zach. We’ve just got black bears around here, and lots of ’em (but they’re lazy and fat from picking out of trash cans). There used to be cougars ages ago, but they’ve all been wiped out. Coyotes abound in some parts too, but they usually don’t rank high on the carnivore list for most people.

I think I would be more worried about a bull moose in rut (or at any other time, really) that I would a bear. Bears do make me a bit nervous, but I’ve heard enough horror stories about moose to know that they’re bad news. You should maybe add some more detail and write up some of your Alaskan wildlife encounters into a nice juicy post.
