Long-Whiskered Owlet spotted in Peru!

22 03 2007

A tiny little bird called the long-whiskered owlet (Xenoglaux loweryi) has been seen for the first time free in its own habitat in Peru (previously they were only seen upon capture in nets). I really wish I had more to write about this, but apparently next to nothing is known about this bird other than that it exists and that it is rare (it’s currently listed as endangered). Even so it’s probably good news researchers have encountered them more as of late, although it seems to follow the pattern of many at-risk species in that we know very little other than it needs to be conserved.
