Today’s photo is of a male Fanged Deer I saw last year at a roadside zoo in Bordentown, NJ.
The zoo is now undergoing renovations, but I hope that is is far more responsible keeping its animals than the time I visited. There were many primates in cramped cages, visitors encouraged to feed animals a mix of fruit loops, peanuts, pretzels, and cereal. In fact, some visitors took it upon themselves to bring their own food for the animals, one small family feeding cheez-its to a tapir. It was so incredibly sad seeing so many animals in unenriching, small environments, especially the primates. I attempted contacting some animals rights groups and the AZA about the place, but I never got any reply.
